Originally known as Ocean Roots, the band formed in Warwick, Rhode Island in early 2013. A year later they were forced to change their name when a group in Texas who went by the same name, owned the copyright for it and got their lawyers to send scary letters. Thus, Rival Roots was born.

The band has been performing their blend of reggae, rock, and ska ever since. The current lineup has been together since 2020 and consists of Justin Leclerc (vocals/trombone/keys), Tom Lupo (lead guitar), Joe Margres (rhythm guitar/vocals/trumpet), Jon Waldstein (bass), and Chris Netro (drums).

They’ve enjoyed sharing the stage with a diverse group of bands such as Ballyhoo!, Crooked Coast, Dubbest, The Slackers, Joe Samba, Dudemanbro, Concrete Beach, The Copacetics, The Toasters, and many more.

The band recorded five new songs in 2021 with producer Ray Gennari, who also worked with the band on their 2019 release. The band will be releasing “One Door,” the second song from those sessions on July 22nd, 2022.
